Tottenham 4-3 Man United as Manchester United lost their Carabao Cup quarter-final against Tottenham on Thursday night after a thrilling 90 minutes.

Ninety-five days after Ange Postecoglou told his critics that he had never failed to win a trophy in his second season, Ossie Ardiles’ knees are trembling. Ardiles was among the Tottenham icons in the VIP seats to watch Postecoglou’s club reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals in typical style, rushing into a three-goal lead against Manchester United.

Manchester United had another dramatic night, losing 4-3 to Tottenham. When Dom Solanke made it 3-0 in the second half, it appeared that United was doomed. However, Ruben Amorim turned the tie on its head by introducing both Amad Diallo and Joshua Zirkzee.

To rekindle the game, the two took advantage of Fraser Forster’s blunders. Spurs scored a fourth, but Jonny Evans’ goal in the 94th minute made for a nerve-racking final 90 seconds. United ultimately lost 4-3, but Amorim took away several positives from the game.

Fraser Forster’s two mistakes in possession allowed United to get back into the game. First, a poor ball to Radu Dragusin inside his own six-yard box allowed Bruno Fernandes to pounce and set up Joshua Zirkzee to equalize.

Then, Forster made a terrible touch to control Archie Gray’s back pass and took so long to reposition his feet and address the clearance that Amad Diallo was able to charge down his kick.

Diallo deflected the rebound into the net. United sensed a great comeback, while Tottenham were gripped by worry, apparently unable to recall what to do as shots rained down on Forster’s goal. Spurs should have been coasting at the end, but Heung-min Son eased the nerves in the 88th minute by swerving in the fourth direct from a corner.

Altay Bayindir claimed he was fouled by Lucas Bergvall, who lunged across him and deflected the United goalkeeper’s left arm, but referees did not witness the incident, and there is no VAR in the Carabao Cup.

Jonny Evans headed in from a United corner to make it 4-3 in stoppage time, but Tottenham held on. It is a significant statement from Postecoglou in pursuit of Tottenham’s first trophy since winning this competition in 2008.
