Ademola Lookman wins 2024 CAF POTY after his incredible display last season with Atalanta helped them win the Europa League after they beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-0. Also, he helped Nigeria reach the finals of the AFCON but suffered a defeat to the Ivory Coast after they took the early lead.
Ademola Lookman, 27-year-old, scored a hat trick in the Europa League final which helped the Serie A club cling to the title ahead of Leverkusen. The Europa League was their second major trophy in the club’s 117-year history.
The former Leicester City, RB Leipzig and Fulham forward scored three goals in the AFCON to help Nigeria reach the finals as they were defeated by a late winner from Sebastian Haller.
Additionally, Zambia’s Barbra Banda also won the women’s African player of the year after leading Orlando Pride to the NSWL Championship as she scored the winner in the final against Washington Spirit.
Lookman scored 17 goals and contributed 10 assists in 45 games across all competitions for Atalanta in the 2023-24 season. He has made a similarly productive start to this campaign, finding the net 11 times in 19 club games, as Gian Piero Gasperini’s team sit two points clear of Napoli at the summit of Serie A.
The other nominees for the player of the year award were Achraf Hakimi (Morocco), Ronwen Williams (South Africa), Simon Adingra (Brighton) and Serhou Guirassy (Dortmund).
Ademola Lookman succeeds fellow country man, Victor Osimhen, as the winner of the CAF Player of the year award. In recent years, Mohammed Salah, Sadio Mane, Riyad Mahrez and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have all claimed the award.
